Astrid Heldmaier

Astrid (bodhrán, vocals, whistles) was born in Erlangen in 1964 and spent many years of her youth in Brazil. Later she finished her degree and training in Berlin and then moved to Hannover.
She was always fascinated with rhythm and took lessons in American tap dance in the 80s. She has danced with the "Non Verbal Communication" dance ensemble from 1993-2003.
She was an active member of the "Drachenkinder e.V" (a club representing and portraying medieval lifestyles) until the summer of 2007. Through her participation in the medieval markets, she heard the bodhrán being played and took part in her first bodhrán workshop in November 2002. Now Irish music and the bodhrán are a very important part of her life.
Astrid also plays the tin whistle and the Northumbrian small pipes in various folk groups and joined Emerald in 2006.
